People from all over the world visit Italy for a number of reasons- for the beauty, the food, the art and the warmth of the people who live there, amongst many others. Lucky for us, we were able to find all of those things in a small Umbrian town called Amelia, at the very special La Gabelletta.
It didn’t hurt that the weather was absolutely perfect during our entire stay and simply being on the property was incredibly relaxing. With rolling hills in the distance and a beautiful lawn and gardens to enjoy- and an outdoor pool, for the kids-morning coffee al fresco was a daily delight.

Lunch, and then dinner, however- was where the magic really came alive. The food was truly out. of. this. world. From the pastas to the pizzas, the cheeses and vegetables, this vegetarian was in paradise. The local wines and desserts were also beyond delicious and each night we’d watch locals flock inside for big, delicious family dinners. The staff of La Gabelletta were all wonderful and it was like we had known them for years. The kids had new “fans” to perform for daily and they looked forward to seeing “their friend,” Marco, daily in the dining room.

Our apartment was lovely. It didn’t feel like a hotel at all, but like a close friend’s home in Italy where we had the luxury of staying for the week. With two bedrooms, two baths, a full kitchen, dining and living room, it was the perfect amount of space for us to sprawl out in comfort. The whole space had an elegant sophistication about it and we especially loved the relaxing sitting area with an endless amount of books to choose from. The four of us spent plenty of time there during our late afternoon, pre-dinner siestas.

Nearby, we visited the historic center of the town of Amelia, which was also great with a gorgeous church, exceptional restaurants and amazing vista points overlooking the countryside. The kids also loved a nearby playground where we spent the better half of one morning. (When it comes to kids, no matter where they are in the world, it’s always the little things -playgrounds and pizza and gelato, oh my!)

We also took day trips to two other gorgeous and perhaps more well-known Umbrian towns, Orvieto and Spello. Both were beautiful– similar to Amelia in a sense, though much larger and commercialized as they are bigger tourist destinations. What’s nice about Amelia is that it had the beauty of these other towns, though the majority of the people we encountered when walking the streets were locals. It was nice for us to explore all three of these places together and enjoyed each of them.

What’s black and white and black and white and black and white and black and white and….? (I wish I could say we coordinated our outfits with the building but in fact, we just lucked out with the zebra-matching photo op.)
