Even though our most recent Boston visit was very last minute, The Mandarin Oriental Hotel came through and welcomed our family with open arms. It happened to be my birthday and from the second we arrived, every staff member we walked by wished me a happy one.

There was a delectable birthday cake waiting in our room; white with a layer of citrus jam and the most chocolatey frosting imaginable. Along with dessert was a sweet card from one of the hotel managers as well as cookies, waters, ice teas and coffee. There were also adorable stuffed animal Lobsters (very New England!) for the kids as well as crayons, coloring books and two glasses of cold milk. The room itself was immaculate and offered plenty of space for the four of us. We stayed in a Back Bay Double Suite with two large beds, a walk-in closet, a generously sized bathroom and a great view down Boylston Street.

After getting settled, we went out for a walk and a quick dinner (Kashmir on Newbury Street is phenomenal for anyone who likes Indian food). Then, after a short sprint through a sudden downpour, we met some friends back at the hotel for some celebratory champagne and Momofuku Milk Bar’s famous birthday cake. They were there when we arrived and told us that everyone at the reception desk was extremely kind and hospitable as they waited for us, offering towels as they were also drenched by the rain.

While I contemplated a post-birthday in-room breakfast the next day, we opted to check out Bar Boloud. This is the hotel’s French-inspired bistro and wine bar from internationally acclaimed chef Daniel Boulud. I made the right decision as our meal was a grand success…

Once again, The Mandarin Oriental struck gold with our children as there were more stuffed animals, crayons and coloring books waiting for them at our table. They loved their meals as much as we did and not only was everything delicious, but the presentation was top notch. I had some of the best pancakes I’d ever tasted and they were topped with a light and sweet, whipped lemon ricotta. The kids were happy with their blueberry pancakes and perfectly scrambled eggs and Ryan enjoyed Eggs Benedict that looked like a work of art.

And though it comes as no surprise, the restaurant staff just as exceptionally attentive as everyone else we came in contact with at The Mandarin Oriental. This was without a doubt an excellent experience and I look forward to our next stay in Boston.
